Brief updates available below [as at 14.11.07] The parliamentarians now supporting us a. Situation: Unstructured but committed support from both houses and with some ministers included; they number about 160. There is much evidence, from civil servants, Ministers and MPs as well as in the press, not only that government departments are now understanding the campaign arguments, but that there is growing support.
b. Main Objective: To continue to grow the group in both houses to ensure an un-ignorable presence throughout government. c. Current actions: i. We are growing the group through work on fronts 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 & 9. ii. We have a series of email requests for all networked groups to ask their MPs to contact and lobby their MPs to assist with fronts 4, 5, 7 & 8. Back to top The good and increasing network of supporters a. This is a wide group but it has failed to attract some important areas, particularly commerce, industry and the arts. We have acceptable but improvable links within education, environment, play & playwork, youthwork, media, law, health, sport, science and spirit group. Awareness of the campaign in government departments is growing - usually with appreciation and support. b. Main Objectives: That all sectors of society become aware of campaign position on the need for a balanced view of risk and adventure and the opportunities opened up by such a position. c. Current Actions: i. Continue search for industry and commerce personality and group involvement ii. Continue awareness-raising through campaigning and delivery on all fronts. Back to top The press lobby a. The press is broad-based, although generally showing ever more favour. The firmest evidence of the success of the campaign to date is through both the ratio of negative articles on adventure to positive, and the degree of understanding within the articles. The press now seems disinclined to 'fire from the hip' and offers more balanced views. We have generally failed to find close links with journalists - although there are significant exceptions. b. Main Objectives: Pretty well achieved. Our ideal [positive thoughtful & informed articles on demand] is not within the journalists' gift. c. Current actions: i. Action continues to gain press support/ers. ii. Pressure to curry support from editors and reporters is ongoing. iii. Specialist press articles continue to be a good route. iv. Increasing success, particularly on fronts 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 & 10, will lead to ongoing success with the press. Back to top The Compensation Bill The Compensation Bill Bill became law on the 25th July, 2006. It has clauses aimed at protecting public goodwill and good intentions and safeguarding people who take sensible risks in education, youthwork and other areas. When contributing to our society, we cannot expect people to risk becoming subject to litigation.
Current actions: Link with work on fronts 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8 & 9. Back to top The Two Early Day Motions [Out of School Education & Private member's Bill] a. These two EDMs [Out of School Education & Private Member's Bill on Volunteering] are most timely. The former now has 70 signatures and the latter 110. b. Main Objective: To continue to grow awareness amongst politicians of the campaign by using the EDMs as a route. c. Current Actions: i. We have a series of email requests out, together with articles in the specialist press, for all networked groups to ask their MPs to contact and lobby their MPs to assist with fronts 4, 5, 7 & 8. Back to top The St George's House Consultation - 14 - 16th November, 2004 a. Situation: Held on 14th - 16th November, 2004, entitled : 'Risk and Enterprise in Society'. Held in partnership with the house. Click for speakers and participants. b. Main objective: To attract the 'leaders and opinion-formers from across society and from different areas of interest and expertise - business, education, entrepreneurial activity, the voluntary sector, the law and government - to come together for a period of intense debate and discussion . The aim of the consultation was to explore the question: 'What is the contribution that healthy adventure and exploration makes, and could be making, to all aspects of society if we were able to remove the blocks and free-up opportunity'. c. Current actions: for the outcomes, see Events & conferences d. Purchase report and support this campaign: SGHReport@campaignforadventure.org Back to top The All Party Parliamentary Group on Adventure [in Society] a. Situation: This group has been launched and has held initial meetings. The remit of the group is being developed through a discussion paper on behalf of the campaign, although this is merely an indication of interests and suggested areas for further discussion by the group when it first meets. b. Objectives: These are yet to be set by the APPG. c. Actions: Apart from the support for the PMB, these will also be agreed by the group. Back to top The Campaign Web Site a. Situation: The Campaign Web Site has retained a steady hit-rate since its creation early in the campaign. It is gratifying to find the site in the first 10 of most search engine enquiries on adventure and risk. The site has recently been further updated [it is usually changed every month] and it continues to retain a number of actions, press comments, support actions, quotations and debate topics. b. Objectives: To be a source of information about the campaign as well as a source for quotation and debate on adventure and healthy risk-taking. c. Actions: continued update following submission of interesting information from network members Back to top The ongoing CfA lobby - involving all the above and much more a. Current situation: Whilst this section incorporates all the above and much more, it is worth noting that the progression of the campaign followed the sequence 'awareness-raising, networking, action and follow-ups' as outlined in the original campaign agenda which can be seen on the web-site. The success of the final part of the original 3year campaign indicated the need for a revised agenda and to this end the Campaign Management Group is being reformed and asked to lead the next stage. Resources have been a major block the campaign activities - of the £4,700 raised through donations, £2000 has been spent on printing, the website, postage and phone conferences, with a further £1500 on the launch of the Lord Hunt 'Inspiring Achievement' book. This has meant little support for travel, administration or ongoing campaign activities: we are grateful for the effort and goodwill donated by the many supporters. It is hoped the next stage of the campaign will be more successful in its fundraising remit. b. Objectives: To review progress, to revisit the agenda and develop a new plan of action - which includes 'new funding'. Back to top
